In a Nielsen study from 2015, nearly three out of every four people would pay more for sustainable items. This is up from approximately half in 2014.

Companies making current environmental issues a priority have a lot to gain. It boosts their reputation in the workplace and they are operating the right way.

IKEA is making an impact on the planet because of their dedication to sustainability.

The “IKEA Group Sustainability Strategy for 2020” is a blueprint for how to reach their goals. In particular, to create eco-friendly products and help the environment by that year.

Since 2009, they have invested EUR 1.5 billion in renewable energy. They’ve committed a further EUR 600 million to these efforts for the future.

Further, the cotton IKEA uses in their products now comes from sustainable sources. Sixty-one percent of their wood does as well, with an eye toward it being all wood by 2020.

Panasonic has committed their company to tackling environmental issues head on.

They moved their corporate headquarters to downtown Newark, by Penn Station. This encourages employees to reduce the carbon footprint in their daily commute.

But they haven’t stopped there.

They’ve established a recycling-oriented manufacturing program for their products.

They also follow an Environmental Action Guideline which pledges to improve the environment.

Patagonia has taken environmentally friendly companies to a new level.

They have been turning recyclable plastic bottles into polyester since 1993.

The company, founded in 1973, has minimalist roots. This guides the principle behind their “Worn Wear” program. They encourage customers to hold onto their Patagonia gear longer and repair it.

Patagonia’s founder, Yvon Chouinard, also co-founded “Once Percent for the Planet.” The organization encourages companies to donate 1% of annual sales to environmental causes.

Unilever adopted their Sustainable Living Plan in 2010. Since then, they’ve taken significant steps towards decreasing their environmental footprint since.

By 2015, 60% of raw materials used in their products were sustainably sourced. They also reduced the waste from disposing their products by 29% compared to 2010.

People around the world have taken note.

In 2015, CEO Paul Polman received the United Nations Champion of the Earth award. This is because of Unilever’s progress in this regard in just five years.

As of 2015, 70% of their products create zero waste or are biodegradable or recyclable.

An impressive 81% of their ingredients and materials are bio-based or recycled.

Seventh Generations wants to move those to 100% by the end of 2020!
